Revision of Joint Replacement

Revision of Joint Replacement

Joint replacement surgery is a treatment procedure in which your surgeon will replace the damaged cartilage with a new plastic and metal joint surface to restore the functions and alignment of your joints. Joint replacement treatment is one of the highly effective means to correct a deformity and to restore mobility. Joint replacement surgery is also performed to eliminate joint pain and to treat advanced arthritis.
Replacing a joint can help you move and feel better. Knee replacement surgery is one of the most common joint replacement procedures. Shoulders, hip, fingers, ankles, and elbows are some of the other joints that can be replaced. Some of the major indications for any joint replacement are inflammatory arthropathy , degenerative joint disease, fractures and avascular necrosis.
When an already replaced joint fails either due to wear and tear after many years, infection, injury or some other problem, the joint needs to be replaced. This is known as revision joint replacement. This is much more difficult and complex compared to a primary joint replacement. These procedures require careful planning and preparation, specialized tools and implants (Prosthesis). These specialized implants are expensive and the procedures are done only by surgeons who have considerable experience in joint replacement surgery.
The most common causes of joint dysfunction are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Some of the other factors include:
    • Heredity
    • Minor repetitive injures
    • Development abnormalities of joints
    • Trauma
Joint arthroplasty is one of the the most frequently performed orthopedic procedure. Total joint arthroplasty, also known as total joint replacement, is the treatment in which both sides of a joint are removed and replaced by artificial implants which are anchored to the bones.
